Calling this 1996 science fiction thriller “a glorified B movie,” isn’t a criticism. Writer-director David Twohy managed to get interesting material on the screen despite a limited budget, and the film is just believable enough to be satisfying as a tale of paranoid conspiracy. If you can ignore the hokey parts and accept Charlie Sheen as noted radio astronomer Zane Ziminski, you’ll get thoroughly involved when the reception of an alien radio signal leads him to Mexico and to a huge underground power plant operated by aliens bent on the eventual takeover of Earth. Ron Silver is suitably chilling as the astronomer’s boss, whose real identity is more horrifying than Ziminski ever imagined. The underground alien lair is memorably creepy, and Twohy’s film is just smart enough to qualify as more than a guilty pleasure. –Jeff Shannon

His bestselling book Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus deals with the premise that men, as Martians, and women, as Venusians, have extremely different ways of viewing coupledom. For this video, ABC News placed an ad in newspapers asking for couples looking to work on their marriages. They received thousands of responses, and from those they chose the six couples who appear in this special. Cameras follow the couples in their daily routines, and we also see them in discussion with each other, detailing the problems of their relationships with remarkable frankness. They don’t shy away from discussing chores, intimacy, and the daily grind, and the picture is not always flattering. Next, each of the couples attends a John Gray lecture and workshops. After five more months, each couple is revisited (the entire process takes a total of eight months); all are in healthier, happier relationships.

Part of the intrigu of this video is the voyeuristic glimpse into the couples’ lives. But more than that, each couple discusses issus that viewers can relate to. As the audience of the John Gray lecture nods along with his statements, it’s hard not to find yourself thinking, “Exactly!” The video does not delve deeply into the philosophy espoused in Gray’s book; rather, it shows his ideas in action. This video will benefit those looking for an introduction to the Martian-Venusian theories, and it will also serve well as a companion to the book. –Jenny Brown

The key players in the radical movement known as the Weather Underground are skillfully brought to life in this Oscar-nominated documentary. The Weathermen were born of sixties protest, but took their scheme to overthrow the U.S. government to especially violent extremes. Never a well-populated movement, the Underground petered out as its leaders aged during the seventies; by decade’s end, weary of hiding, most of them had turned themselves over to the authorities. That journey, by which a fire-breathing revolutionary such as Bernadine Dohrn became a (still fiery) gray-haired wife and mother, is an intriguing one. This film, rich in period footage (and some unnecessary sensationalism) captures the era somewhat broadly. But the present-day interviews with the participants, contrasted with their radical selves, provides an exceptionally detailed look inside the organization itself. It’s not a nostalgic look back, and the overall mood is sobering rather than celebratory. Lili Taylor provides the narration. –Robert Horton

Start spreadin’ the news… Jason Voorhees, the cleaver-hoisting man in the hockey mask, has finally left Crystal Lake behind and taken his vagabond shoes to the Big Apple. Actually, Jason spends most of his time on a cruise ship bound for Manhattan, carving up the unluckiest high school graduation party ever. You’d think the change of scenery might breathe new life, or death, into the series, but chapter 8 is standard stalk ‘em and slash ‘em fare, albeit with a nautical slant. The title hints at a comic tone, but except for the one-joke idea that Jason fits right into the menacing urban scene, forget it. (The comedy would wait until the surprisingly entertaining Jason X.) This one does have a pretty leading lady, Jensen Daggett, whose visions of the young drowned Jason are occasionally creepy. The grown-up Jason, like “these little-town blus,” is melting away. –Robert Horton

Smalls befriends the sandlot gang (which now includes three girls) and its leader, David Vincent Durango, and relates the rumor of “a mutated, insane Bigfoot dog thing” behind the left field fence. Summer unfolds with baseball rivalries, rocket launchers, and the infamous Carnival kissing booth, but fate will forever change the history of the sandlot when a crisis forces Smalls and Durango to join forces against The Fear. Regardless of one’s sentiments on sequls, Evans’ writing in this remake is nearly as fresh and full of memorable quips as the original, including his characteristically understated narration. And while the film may be faulted for its forced melodrama and unseasoned cast, James Earl Jones lends his star appeal and the 70s soundtrack will make you wish for the days when fireworks were legal. Rated PG for profanity and raunchy humor. (Ages 6 to 14) –Lynn Gibson

In the dark years of the 1930s, dance marathons became popular as a way for desperate people to compete for prize money. Sometimes the events would drag on for weeks as contestants pushed themselves far beyond the point of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion, the dancers shambling around the floor in a half-dead stupor. People would then pay to sit in the bleachers, watch the event, and cheer on their favorites. They Shoot Horses is taken from hard-boiled pulp writer Horace McCoy’s novel of the same name; Jane Fonda plays a bitter young woman paired up with Michael Sarrazin for the ordeal. Gig Young portrays the unctuous MC of the event, bringing equal parts compassion and sleaze to his role. Many of the film’s images are unforgettable, such as “the derby,” a heel-and-toe race around the dance floor with bouncy, lighthearted music to accompany the miserable spectacle. It’s a powerful, tragic period piece that reminds us of the privations of the Great Depression. In the largest sense, the film has existential overtones that go far beyond the story of enervated dancers staying on their feet for a month or more. This film brought home a string of Academy Award nominations for the cast and director Sydney Pollack and a win for Young. –Jerry Renshaw
